Neighbourhood Watch

Old Noarlunga Area 66 the neighbourhood watch program (Watch SA) was closing due to lack of support by locals and police. Oncara decided to keep it running through its own organisation until either it was resurrected in its own right or evolved to be run by a sub committee. To date it has a successful safety house organisation but relies on locals totally for all input and organisation. Unfortunately both police involvement and Watch SA effort has been seriously lacking and without commitment from both these organisations the group has been in danger of closing again. State government promises of police manpower has still remained very short on the ground and as the whole idea of this organisation is a partnership between residents and police to protect the neighbourhood, it relies on both parties having an interest in its success.

New initiatives from Watch SA are trying to revive local groups and Seaford is being resurrected at this time. Local neighbourhood residents have heard all the various reasons so many times from law enforcement departments:- Change of shift shortages. Friday and Saturday nights are their busy nights. They drove past and never saw anything. They know it's a problem but manpower is short. You get the number and where they live and they will try to get someone there later.

It's a state wide problem but in the end we as a group are only concerned with the commitment to our town. The recent commitment of resources to the program by the South Australian Police is a positive step in the right direction and Oncara is hoping that it will greatly improve and regenerate the neighbourhood watch program.

Oncara will support and implement community information events to help generate interest in the Neighbourhood Watch program and intends to hold a fete in the near future where the public can gain further help /knowledge on the crime preventative initiatives.
